10/14/15 - Walworth, WI
It was an exciting week in fourth grade at Walworth Elementary and Middle school in Walworth, Wisconsin! This week we read the story "My Librarian is a Camel." The story talked about how children in other parts of the world received books. One section was about how some children in the nomadic villages of Kenya received books by camel because the sand-covered roads were impassable. We invited Mr. Klamm into our classroom to share with us how the students at SOAR-Kenya Academy received books. He shared with us a video (see below) from when he delivered books to the students of SOAR. After seeing the video, the fourth graders decided they wanted to donate books too. One student even had the wonderful idea of donating a "Little Library" to the school in Kenya. Mr. Klamm knows a printer in Kenya that can make our dream come true! Below is a video of our phone call to Joab asking if he and his wife, Naomi, could help.
The fourth graders set a goal of sending 100 books and a "Little Library" to the school. Students have already started donating quarters to this project. We will keep you updated on our progress! |

10/16/15 - Walworth, WI
It is very expensive to ship books from the United States to Nakuru, Kenya. Instead of sending books, students decided to collect change and have books printed in Kenya. This is where Learning A-Z stepped in to help! They donated digital downloads of all of their books for the students of SOAR-Kenya Academy. The cost to print a book in Nakuru is about $.25-$.50 per book. Fourth graders at Walworth helped select the 100 books that would be printed. Each student selected their top 15 book choices via a Google Form. The results were tabulated and the top 100 books were sent digitally to a printer in Nakuru. |
